Alexander Dunlop, 16th of that Ilk, son of James, He held the lands of Dunlop from 1670-1683. Another champion of Presbyterianism. The accounts of the Dunlop family in Burke's Peerage and Baronetage (16th ed.) and in J. G. Dunlop's The Dunlops of Dunlop (1939), give some detail of the early Carolina colonist, Alexander Dunlop's life to 1685. Following his arrest in 1683 and indictment in the following year, Dunlop emigrated to South Carolina, where the Lords Proprietor appointed him sheriff of Port Royal County in 1685. In Carolina he became associated with two politically powerful men, Henry Erskine, 3rd Baron Cardross, and William Dunlop, a relative and local militia commander, both of whom had arrived in 1684. It appears that Alexander Dunlop returned to Scotland by early 1686, probably with the intention of returning to Port Royal, given that he had accepted money and goods from the wives of Cardross and William Dunlop to deliver in Carolina. Dunlop, however, sailed first to Antigua, shipping goods from there to Port Royal by way of his servant Thomas Steel, and then returned to Scotland. There is no firm evidence that Dunlop ever returned to Carolina, and both Cardross and William Dunlop returned to England after 1688 and the accession of William III. see Alexander Dunlop re this line. Alexander Dunlop of Dunlop was the son of James Dunlop of Dunlop and Elizabeth Cunynghame, daughter of Alexander Cunynghame of Corsehill and Mary Houston, daughter of Sir Patrick Houston of that Ilk and Agnes. After some years he returned to Scotland. He was Laird of Dunlop 1670-168
Note:! Scottish Soldier, fought in Siege of Londerry Ireland
Came with 5 sons to Lancaster County Pennsylvania. After the defeat of Baddock
four of the sons moved to more protected sections of North Carolina and
Lancaster County South Carolina. (ref Descendents of John Dunlap 1780-1866).

On his gravestone (in the graveyard of St. Georgerch in Antigua, West Indies) is inscribed -
This Monument Is erected as a Tribute of Respect due to his Talents and Virtues by his Mourning Relations.
General Dunlop was the Son of John Dunlop of Dunlop in North Britain and became the Representative
of that Ancient Family. By his Mother he was descended from the Elder Branch of the Family of the illustrious Wallace the great Defender of Scottish Liberty.
He early embraced a Military Life & in the progressive Stages of Rank distinguished himself during War by his Professional Abilities.
Residing upon his estate during Peace he there displayed the Energy of a zealous And upright Magistrate tempered by the Habits and Accomplishments of a Gentleman and endeared to those it more immediately affected by the Qualities of a benevolent and judicious landlord.
Nothing however prevented his listening to the Call of his Country as often as she became involved in War.
Promoted by his Sovereign in the year of 1803 to the To the Rank of Brigadier General in the West Indies (where for sometime he held the Chief Command). It was his lot to see the Troops under his immediate orders subjected to the dreadful Ravages of Pestilence, Administer the dead and dying unrestrained by any fear of infection his indefatigable endeavour to alleviate their sufferings proved that he needed not the Stimulus of Military Fame to induce him to lay down his life in the Service of his Country. Worn out at length by his Endeavours to check the Progress of Calamity and despairing of Success: after closing the Eyes of a beloved Nephew; the last surviving Member of the European Part of his Family; he submitted and resigned an unresisting Victim to the Fate which his active benevolence had so ardently struggled to avert from others.

(iii) Henry Dundas Robertson arrives at Port Phillip in 185
The description of Melbourne printed below is taken from a small journal kept by Henry Dundas Robertson. The remainder of the journal records a visit to Sydney in the preceding month.
Friday August 6 Geelong
We advanced up the bay till we came in sight of the shipping lying in a tolerably protected inlet of Port Phillip at the mouth of the Yarra Yarra called Hobsons Bay Williams town. This is a low lying collection of houses formed entirely in connection with the shipping
We saw several small steamers racing about the different ships calling here and there in the most capricious manner Yarra Yarra wh. has only 9 feet at its entrance & averages some 50 yards in breadth
At last we arrived at a dirty wharf where myself & six others procured a cart for our luggage cabs there are only three in Melbourne wh. are always engaged by successful diggers at fr.

The next day, August 7 , at 10 a.m. I started down to Williams town in quest of my luggage
In my first walk through Melbourne I was much struck by the handsomeness of the original design of the streets but as yet there are only a few handsome houses five times the freight out fr. England
The town except one or two of the most important streets is well situated on rising hills
Melbourne is at present a most comfortless place James Robertson-Forsyth N.C.S. whom I had left in China & Bird whom I had met between Penang & Singapore & who had got an appt. in the Govt. gold escort

MACARTNEY, HENRY DUNDAS KEITH (1880-1932), regular soldier, was born on 1 February 1880 at Waverley station, Broadsound, Queensland, eighth child of Irish-born John Arthur Macartney and his English wife Annie Flora, n His father, who held extensive grazing and pastoral properties throughout Queensland, had taken up Waverley in 1857. His grandfather was the Very Reverend Dean Macartney of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia; one of Henry's cousins was (Sir) Edward Macartney. Educated at Geelong Church of England Grammar School, Henry served for six years in the Victoria, Australian Cadet Corps.
On 9 March 1900 he joined the Queensland Defence Force and was commissioned lieutenant in the militia field artillery. On 20 June 1901 he was appointed lieutenant in 'A' Battery, the permanent component of the Queensland Regiment of the Royal Australian Artillery, Commonwealth Military Forces. In 1902 he was attached to 'A' Field Battery, New South Wales, Australia, and during this appointment was aide-de-camp to the general officer commanding, Major General G. A. French. Next year Macartney obtained a first-class certificate in the short gunnery course, Sydney, and in 1906 was transferred to Victoria, Australia as a company officer in the R.A.A.
In 1908-10 he was on exchange duty in Britain, and on returning to Australia in 1911 was promoted captain and appointed instructor of artillery in Victoria, Australia. In December he was attached to the instructional staff of the newly founded Royal Military College, Duntroon, where he remained until 1916, from 1914 in the rank of major. After demobilisation Macartney was appointed director of drill at the Royal Military College and in October 1920, after temporary command of the 3rd Battery, A.F.A., he was appointed to the Staff Corps. In 1921 he commanded XVIII Brigade, A.F.A., and in August 1922 transferred to the unattached list; five years later he was placed on the reserve of officers. He retired to Rimbanda, his property near Kentucky, New South Wales, Australia, and was a grazier until his death following a car accident at Cleveland, Queensland, on 24 October 193 He was buried in Toowong cemetery, Brisbane, and was survived by his wife. Alexander Dunlop and Antonia Brown
From Anne CorumHugh NanKivell of
Australia was kind enough to send me copies of part of the book, "Dunlops
of Dunlop" by J. G. Dunlop published 1939. On page 18 is Mr. J. G.
Dunlop's research of the family of Alexander Dunlop and Antonia Brown.
"He (James) had also refused to sign the "band of lawborrowes"
and was denounced to the horn and registrat with letters of caption (1678).
His arrest followed; and he was not released from Edinburgh Castle until
he had executed a heavy bond to keep the peace.
From an entry in the Privy Council Register of the 23rd July 1684, it seems he
had died shortly before that date. By his wife, Eliza Cunningham of
Corsehill (who could boast a descent from Malcolm III), he had a son Alexander,
who, faithful to the family tradition, was compelled to emigrate, suspected of
fighting at Bothwell Brig. Like his clansman and companion, William
Dunlop, he found a home in Carolina, where he became sheriff in 1686.
A letter of Alexander Shields to the above William Dunlop, dated the 25th
December 1699 says that the "laird of Dunlop was cut off by a contagious
sickness in the 'Rising Sun.' " But the death had occurred nearly
three years earlier, for in a deed of 18th January 1697 his son John refers to
his father as "the late" Alexander Dunlop.
By his wife Antonia, daughter and heiress of the late Major-General Sir John
Broun of Fordell, whom he married in 1667, he had several children----John,
Mary, Anna, Robert, Margaret and Francis.
It is most probably this laird (Alexander) who was nominated one of the tutors
to a minor Barclay of Collernie in 1682, when an uncle threatened litigation.
The eldest of Alexander's sons, John is believed to have been reinstated in the
family property (which he caused to be erected into a barony in 1688) by Lord
Dundonald, who had held it in trust since the Pentland rising. He is said
to have died unmarried at Darien -- he subscribed L 500 to the scheme in 1696
through the Principal -- and his younger brother Francis, who was a minor in
1697 -- as were all Alexander's children except John -- succeeded to the estate.
Among the Gairbraid correspondence there is a letter of Francis to Alexander
Dunlop (afterwards Professor of Greek, Glasgow) {I do not know which Alexander
this is} whom he styles his "cussing": it is dated 1693, and
requests that action be taken on a bond of his father's. His signature is
followed by those of his mother, Antonia, and William Kelso (of Dankeith) who
had married Francis' sister Mary and was a writer to the signet: Francis
being still under age, Kelso was very probably his tutor. Mary appears to
have been the elder sister; of the others, Margaret is said to have married John
Baillie of Hardington, and Anna, John Barclay of Cullerny; but according to
Paterson, the three sisters married respectively William Fullarton of Fullarton
(as his third wife), Sir Robert Denham, Bart., of Westshields, and a Mr.
Brewster. Mrs. Fullarton was childless; but Lady Denham's and Mrs.
Brewster's sons, four sons in all, were brought up at Dunlop with Francis' own
children. Robert is believed to have joined the Navy and to have died
fighting the Spaniards."
Mr. J. G. Dunlop adds a footnote that after Alexander's death, Antonia is said
to have married Dr. David Dickson, Edinburgh, younger of Carbery: She had
no issue by him and uses Jamaica MSS as a reference.
Mr. J. G. Dunlop address the issue of the daughters married different people
than the Paterson book, which I have already sent to this list. Mr. J. G.
Dunlop once again uses the reference Jamaica Mss, I do not know what this
reference represents.
Mr. J. G. Dunlop's book address only the Dunlops/Dunlaps of Auchenskaith,
Keppoch, and Gairbraid, and has no further info on the family of Alexander who
married Antonia Brown.
For my Dunlap papers, I have now excluded Alexander Dunlop who married Antonia
Brown as the father of the Waxhaw Dunlap's.
From the research papers of Cecilia Fabos-Becker, there is strong evidence that
the Waxhaw SC Dunlops/Dunlaps may in deed come from a William Dunlap of
Cumberland Co. PA.Cumberland Co., PA Will dtd 12 Jun 1754 proved 8 Sep 1759 of
William Dunlap who emigrated from Northern Ireland, born in Scotland, lived at
West Pennsborough, 1st in Lancaster Co., PA, now in Cumberland Co., PA. (at this
time I do not have a copy of this will)
Family members may have migrated from the Lancaster Co., PA area to Augusta Co.,
VA., and from there into the Lancaster Co., SC
Possible sons of William Dunlop of Cumberland Co. PA., may be the Robert b.
1708, d. 1773, buried Waxhaw cemetery and Samuel b. 1715, d. 1791, buried Waxhaw
cemetery.
I was wondering if anyone else has any knowledge of the William Dunlap with will
dated 1754, Cumberland Co., PA.
Thanks
Ann Corum
