Questions about the connection between Rev. Professor William Dunlap and John Dunlap, Sr.

Questions:

1. The entry on Rev. Professor William Dunlap has a narrative discussion that says he had two sons, Alexander and William. But at the bottom of the page it lists three children, one of whom is John Dunlap, Sr. (Robert Dunlap’s father). What is the source for stating that John Dunlap, Sr. is the son of Rev. Prof. William Dunlap?

2. I knew of John Dunlap, his wife, his children, and that he came from Scotland in 1775. But I did not know of his birth date before now, or that he had been born in the colonies. However, if he was born in 1684, and married in 1755, then he married a 25 year old woman when he was 71 and sired children up until the age of 87 (Archibald in 1771). Not impossible, but certainly noteworthy. So my second question is, what is the source for his date and place of birth?

On my website Archibald Dunlap Jr. http://mydunlap.net/Archibald%20Dunlap%20Jr.html had a son  Samuel Alexander Dunlap http://mydunlap.net/Samuel%20Alexande%20Dunlap.html he had a daughter Margaret Funk Dunlap (Collins) http://mydunlap.net/Margaret%20Funk%20Dunlap%20(Collins).html her son Maurice Mackenzie Collins  http://mydunlap.net/Maurice%20Mackenzie%20Collins.html wrote a book called Genealogy, ECT. of the Samuel Alexander Dunlap Family of Augusta County, Virginia in the book he shows Rev. Prof. William Dunlap married to Sarah Carstairs as being Rev. Prof. John Dunlap parents that married Nancy Colvin. Also known as Nancy Isobell / Isabel Colvin

In the book, The House of Dunlap written by Hanna, James. Ann Arbor, MI. (1957) they also make the same connection, however they do make a comment about the ages.

In the General Register Office, New Register House, Edinburgh, Scotland, #027578 certified document receipt number, Dated 23 Jun 1992: "Extract of an entry in an Old Parochial Register in the Parish of Campbeltown in the County of Argyll, from the Register of Births and Baptisms: March 1765:  Robert; John Dunlop and Isabel Colvin had a son born the 3d and baptized the 7th March called Robert."  Also I have a copy of Archibald Dunlap’s birth record that shows him being born to John Dunlop and Isabel Colvin in 1771.

Also, in the General Register Office, New Register House, Edinburgh, Scotland, "Extract of an entry in an Old Parochial Register in the Parish of Campbeltown in the County of Argyll, from the Register of Births and Baptisms: May 16 1771 Archibald; John Dunlop and Isabel Colvin had a son born the 12th and baptized the 16th May, 1771 called Archibald."

I am not going to say that the connection between Rev. Prof. William Dunlap and Rev. Prof. John Dunlap is fact, but those two sources do make a connection. I am still researching the connection and have asked for help from other Dunlop Historian and hope that one day I can say the connection is truly fact. Because there is a question about this connection I have left it on my website as is hoping that someone may help in resolving this mystery. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Any information that you have on the Dunlap / Dunlop family that you would like to share with me would be welcome by me. As I have stated in my website I am trying to place as much information about the Dunlap / Dunlop family in one place were other Dunlap / Dunlop family members can enjoy it.

Sincerely,

Jerry L. & Wanda B. Dunlap
